Prague, the “City of A Thousand Spires”, has been a junction of European trade routes and a political and social center for centuries. The city achieved much of its present glory in the 1300’s, during the long reign of Charles IV, who established Prague’s university and planned the New Town.
Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” was first performed here, and the city, throughout much conflict in its past, has continued to be a magnificent center of art and architecture, politics and religion. Many visitors wander along the cobblestone streets and charming alleys in Old Town, admire the Prague Castle and the Golden Lane, and enjoy its fine restaurants and breweries, as well as its lively arts scene. The historic heart of Prague, due to its extraordinary character, is on the UNESCO list of World Monuments.
Famous Czech composers include Dvorak and Smetana, and world-class opera and concert performances continue to be held year-round in this magical city on the Vltava (or Moldau) river.
